Ok, ok, perhaps I'm just some perverted bastard, but the word that keeps coming to mind is SEXUAL. This album is dripping with 'SEXUAL', whatever that means. Without a doubt the best stoned sex album EVER. Having previously (foolishly, perhaps) rejected this album for being to dream-poppy (prefer the heavy style of shoegaze, myself) I decided that perhaps this album would be awesomest when stoned.
And damn I WAS REALLY CORRECT. What was once a fairly soppy album (admittedly, I only listened to like one song and then disregarded) turns out to be one of the spaciest, most ethereal and, of course, SEXUAL albums I've ever heard. Guitars and synths are all flanged out and reverbed to hell, and it souds like they used a couple of hundred different effects which can onlybe a good thing.
Of course one may have some valid concerns that this is too dream poppy, but fear not, it's as wussy as you might've feared. Parts like 'When the Sun Hits' are hugely, hugely anthemic, with plenbty of dream pop action before everything gets really triumphant and awe inspiring, like Sigur Ros covering a Jesu song. Tracks like 'Sing' is really sexy, with all of these gossamer-thin female voices hovering around, and everything in a hazey, beautiful sort of fog, almost like Enya completely gone on LSD. 'Souvlaki Space Station' is a poor song name, but the song is excellent, containing more of the lush space-scapes (just made that word up then! HOW GOOD IS IT!!?), with that whole SEXUAL thing going again.
Yeah so basically this si really good. I imagine playing this with an attractive partner of your preffered sex would be pretty awesome (while stoned, though, not sure how good this would work when sober). Amazing stuff, totally beautiful and spacey and really sexual. This almost get's a 6 star rrating (reserved for those that at AWESOME) but it's just a tiny, tiny bit short of transcendent, so 5 it gets.

Louis Armstrong- Perdido, Clarinet Marmalade

Just for the record: By no means is this meant to be a "Ooh, I reviewed a really noisy album and now I'm doing some jazz songs, am I not ECLECTIC?", no, it's more of a "Ok I just killed my brain listening to The Angelic Process and now I need something quieter", because square waves tend to get really annoying.
SOOOOO this is really good. Perhaps this was made especcially to appeal to jazz philistines, I dunno, but those who hate the solo-for-a-really-long-time jazz style songs will find a lot to enjoy here. As with everything Louis did, it's short as (only about 3 and a half minutes) and it's also really melodic. Those like me who find Louis's ballads to be completely insufferable should enjoy these tunes, as they're fairly frantic and melodic and actually quite interesting :O !!! Don't really have anything else to say, except that Perdido is catchy as all hell and has some great piano lines, whereas Clarinet Marmalade has some truly epic classically-influenced clarinet shredding, and they're both REALLY GOOD.
That's pretty much it. Jazz that's accessible and pretty enjoyable but also really skillful. Great for preparing munchies too and for attempting swing dancing, but I wouldn't try to start a mosh with it.
ALSO: I got this from some torrent, it's from 'The Great Chicago Concert 1956', which seems to be an excellent live gig, well worth tracking down.
When Stoned: 4 stars
When Sober: 3 stars (just because jazz isn't normally my thang)

The Angelic Process - Coma Waering

The Angelic Process have been my favourite band for some time, and it was a logical choice to rave about them for my first post, as this was the band that inspired me to do this blog.
Anyway, these dudes are pretty awesome, could be described as shoegaze and metal I guess, or as I like to think: REALLY LOUD GUITARS with nods to MBV. Their next (and unfortunately, last) album is where things get pretty gothic and melodramatic, and it's actually better then this one. However, this one has planet sized riffs and lots of noise, so it's the best one to hear when baked, no doubt.
Indeed, all the requisites for awesome stoned music are here. Riffs and bass are huge, the drums are totally retarded but still quite suitable, and the vocals are soaring and great for some tormented stoned bellowing of some sort. The massive ending of "The Sun in Braids" was possibly written purely for getting stoned to, whilst Neurosis would kill for the huge, epic riffing that's "My Blood Still Whispers".
The pacing in this album makes it kind of difficult to properly stone too, though. Some are totally awesome- 'The Sun in Braids' is where TAP get their big, triumphant riffage on (the end is HUGE) and it's pretty short and excellent. The title track with it's epic tribal beat action also works quite well for extended bouts of retarded dancing, but that's generally about it. The whole album's excellent, but unless if you like getting really depressed I wouldn't recommend the huge wall of sound that's "Crippled Healing" or the Sigur Ros style closer that's "Shielded in Light". An awesome album while not stoned, no doubt. But most of the songs just aren't as good when baked. Everyone should get this, but expect for the epic strains of 'The Sun in Braids', this album is best listened to sober.

Blog is up! A manifesto.
My name is Caspian! I like music a lot and I also enjoy the occasional bit of weed/marijuana/pot. As I'm sure is the case with many other fans of the fine herb, I have noticed that music sounds totally awesome when I'm stoned, but much to my surprise there's nothing on the net that really serves as a quality guide for music that's good, or great, or totally awesome to listen too whilst under the influence.
So, I have created this blog with the aim of providing some sort of advice to those who aren't sure what to put on while stoned. It will mostly be focusing on the slo 'n' lo genres of drone, ambient, doom and variants thereof, but I'll be trying to keep it at least somewhat varied, with lots of electronica, shoegaze, jazz, and plenty of songs that can actually be danced and/or headbanged(?) to. Sometimes my reviews will just be a bunch of unrelated songs, otherwise it may just be a full length or something. Regardless, good times will be ensued and hopefully this blog will be of some use to my fellow stoners. Have a good time reading!
